How to Create a 2021 Social Media Holiday Calendar + List of 263 Social Media Holidays & Hashtags

From #InternationalCatDay to #NationalCookieDay, everyday can be a social media holiday. đŸ„ł

And brands are quickly catching on to the fact that social media campaigns shouldn't be limited to statutory holidays alone. They’re leveraging these holidays to boost their brand exposure and sales.

Afterall, 1\3 of shoppers state their holiday weekend purchases were driven by promotions. And social media platforms are at the top of helping them decide where to shop as ODM Group found that 74% of consumers make purchasing decisions using social media.

Despite the pandemic in 2020, online shoppers spent 3% more during Christmas holidays than they did in 2019.

So the holiday shopping trend is definitely rising with every passing year.

Keep reading to discover tips on how to create a social media calendar for your brand or clients' social accounts + explore a list of 263 holidays and holiday hashtags you can leverage in 2021.

Why You Should Actively Post Social Media Content on Holidays?

While boosting sales is always a plus, here are a few other reasons why you absolutely need to make holidays an essential part of your brand’s social media marketing strategy.

Expand Your Reach

In 2017, Macy's ran their “Lighthouse | The Perfect Gift Brings People Together” Campaign to emotionally connect with their audience.

Here's a look at the video campaign (I'm not crying you're crying):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TgqEjOz9zs

The result?

4 million views on YouTube and a substantial boost in sales.

Celebrating holidays on social media means participating in related hashtag campaigns. That allows you to reach out to more people, basically everyone who’s celebrating that holiday.

It’s also a great time to run contests and giveaways in the guise of a celebration and that helps to increase your brand’s social media reach, too.

Increase Your Social Media Engagement

Holidays are a great season to run user-generated campaigns that can substantially increase engagement and activity on your social media profiles.

Starbucks Red Cup Photo Contest is an example of a successful user-generated campaign.

They ran a festive contest where users were asked to create fun designs on their iconic red cups and share on social media using the #RedCupArt. The best designs would then get featured on their social profiles.

This holiday hashtag campaign has over 2000 posts.

Entertain and Educate Audiences

Leveraging holidays on social networks allows you to create fun posts and entertain your audience without trying too hard.

Take #NationalPizzaDay for example. You can put up a fun picture of your employees enjoying pizza together at the workplace.

For #NationalSiblingsDay you can put up videos of employees with their siblings.

Celebrating holidays on social media is a great way of lightening the mood and connecting with your audience on a personal level.

While entertaining your audience is always a good idea, you can use these holidays to educate them, too.

Tonara celebrates #ReadABookDay by doing more than posting a cute graphic/quote on social media.

They explored the Instagram Carousel feature with their teacher's recommendations.

4 Steps to Creating a Social Media Holiday Calendar

How do you amp up your brand’s or your clients brand’s social media marketing and leverage holidays in 2021?

By creating a social media holiday calendar. Below we'll outline four easy steps with examples of how you can effectively create one.

Step 1 - Review last year’s holiday marketing strategy and results

When starting to create a social media holiday calendar, “it’s best to examine and analyze your company’s annual social media performance in order to determine your most successful posts (and replicate them) and identify the areas of your strategy that need improvement.” Explains Simon Elkjé, Chief Marketing Officer, avXperten.

JP Brousseau, CEO and founder of Phone Loops, shares, “Before creating a new social media holiday calendar, I review the one from last year. It helps me understand the process of it as I see what approaches failed to draw attention.”

So the first thing you need to do is take a trip down the memory lane and review last year's strategy, wins, and fails with your marketing team.

  • What kind of content worked and what didn’t work?
  • What holidays and trends did you jump on, which ones did you miss?
  • What would you do differently this year?
  • Which hashtags and holidays did your audience celebrate last year?
  • Which social platforms reaped the best results for your brands?

As Rex Freiberger, CEO, Gadget Review reveals, “We see the most engagement on Mondays and Fridays between the hours of 11am and 3pm, so we try to plan our calendar around those days and times primarily.”

Use this data to shape 2021’s social media holiday marketing strategy for your brands.

Tip: Did you know that HeyOrca's social media management tool lets you automatically create visual, easy-to-understand social media reports at the touch of a button?

With HeyOrca Reports, you can quickly create a report of your top performing posts for the year to help plan out your 2021 social media holiday calendar.

Step 2 - Outline your 2021 holiday marketing goals

What are you looking to achieve this year for all the brands you’re managing?

Do you want to reach out to a broader audience base during holidays, get more engagement, run holiday-specific campaigns and boost sales, or just stay relevant on social media?

Which social media platforms would you like to increase your brand presence on this year?

What kind of content would you like to experiment with?

Outline your brands’ social media marketing goals for 2021 and what you hope to achieve from the holidays this year.

Step 3 - Prepare for the holidays in advance

Decide which holidays you’d like to celebrate with your social media audience beforehand.

Here’s a list of 2021 holidays to add to you or your clients’ social media calendars.

As Noah Alexander Smith rightly says, “Try to get your content planned weeks ahead so as the holiday nears you can more easily adapt and put up holiday items on the fly without having to worry about anything.”

Paul Mc Laughlin, MD at Chartered Surveyor London adds, "While it’s a good idea to target public holidays with your content, you need to be a bit clever about this.  For example, many people make the mistake of posting their best content on Christmas Day, whereas, a better plan is to hit people up on Boxing Day when people have considerably more down time than they do on the 25th when they’re celebrating with family and friends."

Tip: You can use a social media management tool like HeyOrca to quickly plan and schedule holiday social media content. HeyOrca's visual social media calendar allows you to schedule posts, copy them across multiple social networks, and request client approvals at the speed of social!

Keep data at the forefront

With a plethora of holidays (silly ones, serious ones, sombre ones, religious ones,  and on and on), how do you decide which ones to go for?

Listen to your audience and gather data.

There are a ton of social monitoring tools on the market that will not only tell you what your audience is saying about your brand or your client’s brand, but also what they’re saying about the different trends that pop up in your industry.

The better your research and data, the more targeted (and successful) your marketing strategy will be going into 2021.

Jake, CEO of DebtHammer, advises businesses to, “make a list of evergreen holiday topics, ideally based on past data and/or research, and then keep an eye on trends.

Do this for every platform and analyze how long the hashtag stays relevant, how many genuine accounts (not bots) are using it, how much traction those posts are getting, etc.

If you have software to analyze this, even better.”

Choose relevant holiday hashtags

When planning your brand’s holiday content and campaigns, choose hashtags that are relevant to your brands’ geographical location and audience.

There are a ton of tools available that can aid you in your hashtag search so make good use of those.

Some of the most popular ones include:

Step 4 - Measure performance

Have a plan in place to measure your brands’ hashtag and campaign performance, so you can optimize your content.

Conduct A\B tests, use social monitoring tools to listen to the audience's conversations and what they feel about your campaigns, and constantly monitor your progress so you can optimize your campaigns.

Additional Tips for Planning Social Media Holiday Content + Examples

Flaunt your brand’s charitable side

If your brand has done any charitable work, Kim Brown of Condo Control says, “holidays are a good time to share that.

#GivingBack #WorkFamily are two hashtags that marketers may have success with.”

#GivingTuesday is also a great holiday hashtag you can use in your social media posts.

Don’t go heavy on over-saturated holiday hashtags

“Use one in a promotional post and examine the data before you combine it with any other. Give it at least 8 hours to get usable data.” Explains Jake Hill, CEO of DebtHammer.

With hashtags, quality trumps quantity

Mark, Head of Marketing at Kintell, recommends brands to use no more than 3-5 targeted hashtags.

“By limiting your hashtag usage, the algorithm on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn won't throttle your posts. You should aim to use fewer hashtags, but still, ensure that these hashtags are populated.

If you use hashtags that are too specific, you won't enjoy as much reach as if you used general ones. That's because fewer people follow and interact with specific hashtags.

For example, on Christmas day, #christmas is going to be more effective than #merrychristmas (58% vs 4% interaction rates). Keep it targeted, but not too specific, and your content will enjoy greater reach.”

Leverage brand hashtags

This is the best time to make use of your brand hashtags and encourage your audience to do the same. Especially if you’re conducting a social media holiday campaign.

Ron Evan of Thrive Agency is of the same opinion and shares, “This will help to increase brand awareness over time and develop a presence on the platforms that you use. As your brand grows, you might see that more and more people use your brand hashtag too.”

At HeyOrca, we use the hashtag #takebackyourday because our mission is to help marketers take back their day.

Here's an example of Red Bull's #PutACanOnIt hashtag campaign that encouraged user generated content:

Experiment with different types of content

Once you’ve decided on all the holidays you’d like to celebrate with your audience, Milosz of Chilli Fruit Web Consulting, recommends planning holiday content on a quarterly basis.

“After noting all the major holidays for the year, I tend to work on a quarterly basis whereby I put together outlines of the posts that I’ll be publishing during each holiday. From there, I’ll amend the posts on a month to month basis to factor in current events and then I’ll add images and schedule the posts for publishing.” Shares Milosz.

Ideally you should experiment with all kinds of content and see what resonates best with your audience.

You can even put your creativity to the test by creating your own social media holidays like Lukasz Zelezny of SEO.London does:

"I like to make up my own holidays for social media - and sometimes make them as silly as possible, such as National Wear Odd Socks Day.  Strange as it may sound, this really works as it grabs attention and captures people’s imaginations really quickly and effective.  Sure, you’ll get some snippy comments but, on the whole, your audience will be happy to get on board with it."

Here are some examples of different types of social content you can incorporate into your holiday calendar:

Social Stories

Did you know, all platforms with a Stories format (Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp) have over half a billion daily active users each?

Even Twitter came out with Fleets to join others in the Stories bandwagon.

Stories are an excellent way to forge an emotional and personal connection with your followers on holidays. It’s also a great time and tool to introduce flash sales, quizzes, polls, and other engaging content.

Host live sessions on social

A Q and A with the CEO or marketing head always makes an interesting live session on social media. If you can rope in an influencer or celebrity for a live session, that’s even better.

Here’s WestElm conducting a Live session and collaborating with women who create beautiful products using fibre.

Another great way to use live sessions is to celebrate the holiday in your workplace with your followers. Take them along for the ride.

Create Snackable Holiday Social Media Content

Experiment with snackable content - short videos, GIFs, fun boomerangs, and time lapse videos during the holidays.

Educate your followers like Overstock did.

Launch a holiday social media contest or giveaway

“For a personal injury law firm located in a small town, we are doing the 12 Days of Giving with small contests by sharing your favorite holiday activities and memories.

To make it even more personal to the community, we are giving away local gift cards each day from shops in that town. This ties in the connection to the audience as well as supporting the local community.

The response has been great and has increased engagement and connection with the audience on social media.” Jamie Taylor of  Taylored Media Group shares.

KrispyKreme also ran a super fun social media contest last month.

They ran a poll on Instagram Stories and asked users to choose their favorite doughnut. Needless to say, it was a huge hit with their followers!

10 tried and tested tips for making the most of holidays on social media

If you’d like to further boost your brand’s social media holiday marketing strategy, you’re in for a treat.

We asked several social media marketing professionals their best tips and tricks for making the most of these holidays and here’s what they said.

Look up monthly observances

“Women’s history month is in March and Women’s Small Business month is in October. There is also Black History month in February and Poetry Month in April.

Find observances that align with your business or organization. They make great social media posts, monthly themes and blog topics that always get a lot of engagement.” Shares Amanda of MacManda Media.

Schedule posts in advance

Take a day out and schedule out a week or two weeks of holiday content in advance. This helps save time and makes it easy for you to ensure you don’t miss out any important holidays, especially if you’re managing multiple client brands.

And according to John Ross, CMO of Test Prep Insight, the best time to post is early afternoon.

“In previous years, we have tested the engagement with our posts based on timing of releases around the holidays, and early afternoon posts have the best engagement by far -  Retweets and shares were 13.4% higher than when the post occurred in the morning and 15.4% higher than evening posts.” Explains Ross.

Tip: With HeyOrca, you can leverage reporting data to get a sense of best times to post and use the default posting times feature to pre-select your preferred scheduling times on each of your clients' social accounts.

Increase engagement around the holidays

“People are feeling less connected because they are not going out as much to holiday office parties, happy hours, gathering and more.

Use this time to connect with your audience virtually by encouraging them to share their favorite holiday traditions, their favorite Christmas movies, and more.

People want to connect and connecting with them in this personal way will increase your connection with your audience.” Explains Jamie Taylor, of Taylored Media Group.

Give back to the community during the holidays

“Giving back to the community is the most fulfilling sentiment one can have, and what better time than the winter holidays - donate a percentage of your sales to a local charity. Encourage your followers to do the same.

You kind of already know what your audience is like and what they care about - show them how much you care about them.” Explains Emanuel Petrescu, a digital marketing specialist from Toronto.

The folks at Hello Bello took things to another level by celebrating #GivingTuesday for an entire year.

Use social media as social proof

“We come up with a list of past and present customers who resemble the qualities of our potential buyer. We anticipate the fact that our leads want to know who else we have  worked with and what were the results.

We back up our customers' testimonials with stats and numbers from social media to prove our claims and work on a great storytelling approach to get our lead excited hearing more from us.

We then schedule it 3-4 times a week to get the desired brand mileage that we have set in our social media campaign.” Michael Hammelburger, CEO @ Cost Reduction Consultants

Warby Parker is a pro at creating fun content using social proof.

Don’t discount silly holidays

“Look for daily holidays for your brand. They can spark fun ideas for posts and lots of fun engagement.” Explains Amanda of MacManda Media.

Here’s MacManda Media celebrating #NationalCatDay

Lexi, of Lloyd Jones LLC, is of the same opinion.

“We love researching and sharing fun "national days" with our residents and followers as a way to engage.

For example, sharing an animated gif for National Taco Day and asking where's the best taco spot in their town, or Dress Up Your Pet Day with a virtual costume contest with prizes for residents who post a photo.” Shares Lexi.

And if you’re an agency managing multiple social media accounts, look for silly holidays that relate to your brand. There's no shortage of silly holidays that you can promote your clients' brands with!

Increase engagement-boosting posts

“We plan at least 25-30% of our posts to be engagement only type posts. They only have one goal to be measured and that’s how well they engage our page followers.

We have seen people’s engagement increase 48% and have seen the total number of people engaged in our content increase 8X.

Post’s like “Help us settle the debate” with a poll for whether Christmas lights should be white or multicolored and a video showing both types of lights with a nice graphic overlay. The engagement was off the charts on Facebook.

These types of fun posts have also shown a boost in our IG presence with an increase of 2-3% new followers during the holidays.” Michael of Problem Solver's Consultants L.L.C.

Connect genuinely with your audience

“Communicate more with your followers, return messages, and reply to comments.

It’s a time to be a little more genuine, and connecting with viewers will make you appear positively on social media!” Suggests Wesley Burger, Marketing Director of CloudTask.

Prepare to spend more

“Paid ads/PPC always cost more during the holiday season, but you’d be hurting yourself if you don’t budget accordingly.

Spending more during the holiday season is pretty much standard practice among many businesses.” Advises Danny Pollack, CEO of Bespoke Extracts.

Utilise holiday weekends for sales

When building a social media holiday calendar, Sara Bernier, Founder of Born for Pets, says, “Emphasize layering informational posts during the earlier weekdays (i.e. holiday hours) and then layering discount deals or holiday specials on the later weekdays.

This is done because most customers will be ready to buy as the weekend rolls around and it's best to touch that emotion with specials.”
